Understanding Walk Activity 101
Walks are identified on the Fi App's Timeline Tab with a paw print icon 🐾 . To understand how your dog's steps are calculated, see How Are My Dog Steps Calculated?. A Walk Activity Card will look like this within the Fi App:
You may have a car ride tracked as a walk. Scroll down to Car Rides Tracked as Walks 🚗 🦮 to understand why. For information on all Activity Cards and troubleshooting, see: What Are Activity Cards?
If you feel your Walk Card does not show your dog's walk properly, see: Why Is the Information on My Activity Card Incorrect?

Using the above example, the Walk Activity Card notes:
- The date of the walk: February 12th
- The time the walk began: 8:15 am
- What owner the collar was paired with, if any: You
- The neighborhood the walk began in: Boerum Hill
- Total steps earned: 9,136
- Length of walk in time: 36 minutes
- Total mileage covered: 1.65 miles
Walk activities are captured when there is activity and a change of location outside of a safe zone, with a green dot to indicate the beginning point, a red dot to indicate the endpoint and the path walked in between. Walks can be broken into segments if there is a rest period during the walk. Depending on your settings, you will get different push notifications regarding a walk activity. See: Alerts & Notifications 101.
For the most accurate route tracking, Fi recommends bringing your smartphone on walks with your dog, with the Fi App open in the background of your device (see: How to improve Fi App Mobile Connectivity). If someone else is walking your dog, we recommend they carry their smartphone, and join your account as an Owner. See: Adding/Removing Multiple Owners.

Walk Troubleshooting 🛠
Walks captured on GPS:
Walks captured on GPS will not be accurate. If you don't take your smartphone device with you when you walk your dog, the Fi Collar will power on GPS. Keep in mind, on its own, GPS is:
-
Fairly inaccurate - about 50-60 ft accuracy for each location report due to GPS technology (independent of Fi). On GPS, the Fi Collar will try to look for a location once every 5 minutes (to preserve battery)
-
Battery intensive (see: Battery Life) - GPS drains your dog's Fi Collar battery the quickest.
This is an example of a walk captured on GPS. Notice a GPS walk shows yellow dots vs. 1 green dot (starting location) and 1 red dot (end location):
A few factors can identify these walks:
- No owner is listed.
- The yellow dots indicate the GPS data that is captured.
-
The walk path will not follow streets and will cut through roads, as the Walk Card simply connects the limited GPS points available.
- If you tap into the Walk Card, you'll see a warning displayed This walk tracking is approximate. SEE WHY:

Car Rides Tracked as Walks 🚗 🦮
The Fi Collar tries to interpret all your dog's activities, including car trips.
A walk is a change in location and activity. If your dog moves around while inside the car during their car ride, this may be reported on the Fi App as a walk.
The Fi App can determine if your dog is walking or on a car ride by using your phone’s motion and fitness data. To ensure this feature is turned ON, follow the below steps.
Steps to Turn On Motion & Fitness Data on Your Phone
iOS Option 1:
- Open the Settings menu on your iPhone.
- Scroll to the Fi App.
-
Allow Fi to Access:
- Motion & Fitness toggled on.
iOS Option 2:
- Open the Settings menu on your iPhone.
- Scroll to Privacy.
- Scroll to Motion & Fitness.
- Ensure Motion & Fitness is toggled on for the Fi App.
Android:
- Open the Settings menu on your Android.
- Tap Apps & notifications.
- Tap into the Fi App.
-
Tap Permissions.
- Allow Physical activity.
Depending on the terrain, you may notice that the movement in the car will capture some segments of the drive as a walk as well. Typically, this will occur on shorter car rides, in local traffic.
