A microchip is a great resource as a reactive measure of finding your pet. However, microchips are not a GPS device, like the Fi Device, where you can track in real time.
A microchip is a small, electronic chip implanted just below the surface of your pet's skin. When a microchip is scanned, it transmits an identification number. This identification number is then used to look up the contact information linked to the microchip's manufacturer's registry. A microchip cannot live track a lost pet or provide you with the pet's current location.
The Fi Device shows your pet's location and if they have escaped in real time.
Microchip vs. Fi Device
See how a microchip compares to a Fi Device below.
| Microchip | Fi Device with Membership |
| A microchip is a reactive method when it comes to finding your lost pet. | The Fi device with a GPS membership is a proactive method of finding your lost pet. |
| The pet must be found. You are not notified if your pet escapes. | Fi will alert you once your pet leaves any of your designated Safe Zones. |
| After the pet is found, you have to rely on the person who found them to take your pet to a vet or shelter. | You do not have to rely on someone to take your pet to a vet or shelter to be notified of their location. You will receive notifications from Fi informing you of their location. |
| The vet or shelter must have the right model of microchip scanner (corresponding to the manufacturer of the chip itself) to access the contact information associated with the chip. | The Fi Device uses GPS to track your pet's location and movement at any time. Therefore, you can see your pet's location of where they have wandered off to and where they are heading. |
| Finding a lost, microchipped pet could take longer than expected. | If your pet is lost wearing a Fi Device (with an active membership), you'll have the information needed to locate them in minutes. |
