Your pet’s Fi Device can connect to a known Wi-Fi network when it's out of range of the Fi App or Fi Base. Understanding the reach of your Wi-Fi is important—whenever the device connects, it reports the location associated with that network. This helps avoid unnecessary GPS or LTE-M activation, which conserves battery life.
Testing your Wi-Fi coverage is simple and gives you a clear view of where on your property your pet can roam while staying connected. It’s a quick way to ensure accurate location updates and maximize power efficiency.
Steps for Testing Your Wi-Fi Coverage in Your Home
What you will need to test: Your Fi Device and mobile device with the Fi App
Total time: 15 minutes
- If you have a Series 2, 3, or 3+, unplug your Fi Base so your device can connect to Wi-Fi.
- Remove your pet's Fi Device (remove their collar with the Fi device still attached) and place it in a frequently visited room.
- Walk away from your Fi Device with your mobile device. This allows your Fi Device to connect to Wi-Fi instead of your phone via Bluetooth.
-
Wait 2–3 minutes, then check the Fi Device’s connection status:
-
Open the Fi App and tap the Live Tab:
-
Tap your pet's profile picture in the Live Card:
-
View the Live Map. Tap your pet's photo to reveal the current connection state:
-
The status card will display the current connection source.
-
Please note: Bluetooth connections can occur through walls/floors. You may need to walk outside to break this connection.
The status card will display Wi-Fi connection like this:
-
-
To finish the test, exit the full map screen by tapping the back button in the top left corner:
-
You’ve now mapped out the reach of your Wi-Fi coverage, giving you better insight into where your pet’s Fi Device stays connected and how to optimize battery performance and location accuracy.
